Yogyakarta, a veritable hub of politics and Indonesian art, is my new home, and will continue to be my home for the next six months.
‘Jogya’ feels like it’s a living, breathing organism sometimes. The roads vibrate with life, the people are quick to smile and wall after wall is coated with lively graffiti.
Graffiti in Jogja seems to be less about tagging, or nonsense scribbling and more about the street artist actually saying something.
Our road, Jalan Affandi (fittingly named after a famous Indonesian artist), is a canvas that graffiti artists have enjoyed covering for a while it seems. And by the looks of it, the government has encouraged this by placing special areas for artists to display their art.
Walking the streets, camera in hand, I enjoy hunting out new street art. I hope you enjoy it too.
This guy claimed to be the artist. His laugh here was kind of a ‘okay you got me’, when I jokingly called him a liar.
